The main farming enterprise
was Dairy until the mid 1970’s when the milk quota and dairy herd were sold to a neighbor and crop
farming has continued on at the home farm to the present day.
In 1998, we branched out and purchased a 650 acre cow/calf operation including the Simmental/Limo/Char
commercial cow herd. We purchased a purebred ET Gelbvieh bull and successfully introduced a
more moderate temperament into the herd without compromising maternal & performance traits. We
introduced the Red Angus breed into our program to compliment the maternal, growth
traits of the Gelbvieh commercial cows and enhance carcass/calving ease traits. Today’s commercial
cows are a Gelbvieh/Simmental/Red Angus cross combining the maternal, temperament, performance &
calving ease traits of all 3 breeds.
Our cow herd emphasizes thickness, maternal/mothering ability on a deep,
moderate frame and that are easy to get along with. In our purebred program, we use a variety of AI sires to compliment the
traits of our cows in order to produce breeding bulls to service the broad spectrum of cow frame sizes
from larger continental to smaller British breeds. Performance tested bulls are used for clean up after
artificial insemination.
We have a simple, straight forward program, producing and feeding the best possible forages we can
grow and following a strict herd health, vaccination protocol. Our purebred Red Angus cows are calved
in two groups, one starting in September and one starting in February. This gives us a good selection
of bulls and females at both “Long Yearling” and “Yearling” ages to service a variety of cattle
industry needs. Bulls are tested at a BIO (Beef Improvement Ontario) test station using a low protein,
low energy ration.
Our commercial cows are calved in two groups, one in March/April and one on grass starting in May/June.
In addition to our bulls, we have both open & bred purebred and F1 females for sale from time to time.
Visitors are always welcome at the farm! Just give us a call to let us know you’re coming.
